REDDING, Cal. -- Northbound traffic on Interstate 5 for Northern California is facing a tire chain screening checkpoint at Fawndale, ten miles north of Redding. It is just one of the travel restrictions underway in Northern California today.

Caltrans says State Route 89 closed this morning approximately four miles north of the Shasta/Siskiyou County line due to winter weather conditions, and State Route 3 closed overnight at Scott Mountain, also due to snow and winter weather conditions.

This morning Caltrans updated and reinforced its advisory that all vehicles traveling northbound on I-5 are being screened for chains at Fawndale in order to proceed north.

It also says, "Northbound I-5 is closed to all big rigs and vehicles with trailers at Fawndale, 10 miles north of Redding, due to winter weather conditions."

At 1:22am it noted that all vehicles were being screened and metered at Fawndale after all vehicles had been held at Fawndale starting around midnight.

Caltrans roadway and tire chain information is at QuickMap.dot.ca.gov and the free app is available for downloading in phone app stores.
